Description
Naginzole #1 – Bulambuli: A Bright and Intense Ugandan Natural
Naginzole #1 from Bulambuli is a captivating natural coffee, known for its bright, intense flavors with a prominent mango note. In Lugisu, the local dialect, Naginzole describes an indigenous bird that lives in the Bulambuli forest and loves to eat mangoes. This coffee embodies the vibrant essence of the region, offering a unique and delightful tasting experience.
Our coffees from Bulambuli are produced in collaboration with Ibero, our long-time partners. For this project, Ibero built a new washing station in 2022, where they pulp, ferment, and dry the coffees we buy. This station works with 200-400 farmers who deliver cherries, benefiting from the high altitudes ideal for coffee production. The lower altitudes are used for drying purposes, ensuring an optimal, controlled drying process managed by highly specialized professionals.
The varieties in this region are similar to those in Kenya, predominantly SL14, SL28, and SL34. Farmers in Bulambuli operate smallholder farms, each less than 1 hectare, managed by family members and located in parishes or communities. These high-altitude areas have great potential for producing distinctive flavor profiles. The harvest runs from August to January, with cherries either bought at collection centers or delivered directly to the washing station for processing.
Ibero provides financial support for the washing station and cherry purchasing, managing cherry buying, financial control, farmer support, and traceability protocols. They also control milling, grading, bagging, and exporting. By sourcing unique lots and paying premiums for quality, we aim to improve the financial and social security of the producers, fostering the development of the specialty coffee market in Uganda.
