Espresso coffee is ideal for many people because you can enjoy it in different drinks, cold, hot, with or without milk! However, regardless of the machine that everyone has in their home, perfecting an espresso requires time, patience and many tests. This approach, perfected after years of testing in the Handpicker coffee lab, rewards the consumer with clear and balanced results.

STEP 1

Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the portafilter well so that it is free of coffee grounds and various oils.

STEP 2

Weigh the coffee. Adjust your grinder to grind the coffee finely.

STEP 3

The amount of coffee you use depends on the size of your portafilter basket. Most of the time, it is between 14 and 18 grams. Make sure you know what you have and use a scale to weigh your dose accurately.

STEP 4

Make a uniform brown bed. Do not leave gaps or mounds.

STEP 5

Grasp the tamper and firmly press the coffee into the portafilter. Use enough pressure to concentrate the coffee grounds into a box.

STEP 6

Gently insert the portafilter and make sure it fits snugly on the head. Pull the espresso to the desired weight — about 2.5 to 3 times the weight of ground coffee. Start your timer at the same time as you start the espresso.

STEP 7

Once you have drawn your espresso, remove the portafilter from the head of the group and throw the dregs from the portafilter basket in the trash or in a cutting box.

Coffee & Water

The finished espresso should weigh 2.5 times as much as your coffee dose.

If you want to try a different batch size use 1g of coffee for every 18 grams of water.
