The French Press is a classic immersion brewing method that allows the coffee grounds to fully interact with hot water before being separated via a plunger and metal mesh filter. Thanks to this method, the brew retains more oils and gives a fuller‑bodied cup with depth and character. It’s perfect for enjoying your specialty beans when you want something rich, smooth, and satisfying.
For a standard brew (for about 2 cups):
Coffee: 18 g
Water: 250 g at ~93‑95 °C
Grind: Coarse, similar to sea salt or breadcrumbs.
Make sure your French Press is preheated (rinse with hot water), discard rinse water, then add coffee grounds.
Preheat & rinse the French Press with hot water, then discard the rinse water.
Add the coarsely ground coffee to the warmed French Press.
Pour about half the water over the grounds and allow the grounds to bloom / saturate.
After ~30 seconds, stir gently to ensure even saturation.
Add remaining water to reach your total, place the lid on (plunger up) and let steep for ~4 minutes. After brew time is complete, slowly press the plunger all the way down.
Immediately pour the coffee into your cup or another vessel — do not let it sit on the grounds, to prevent over‑extraction.
| Mistake | What it causes | Fix |
|---|
| Grind too fine | Sludge, over‑extraction, bitterness | Use a coarser grind |
| Water too hot (>96 °C) | Harsh flavours, burnt notes | Aim for ~93‑95 °C |
| Letting the coffee sit after plunging | Bitter or muddled flavour | Pour immediately after plunging |
| Not pre‑heating pot | Heat drop during brew → inconsistent extraction | Rinse and warm French Press before use |
| Stirring too aggressively | Fines mobilisation → sediment, heavy body | Stir gently for ~5 seconds at ~30 s mark |
