The Salaverria family has grown coffee in El Salvador for six generations, with roots in Huachapan. José Antonio Salaverria and his sons Andrés and José Antonio Jr. manage three primary production areas around the Santa Ana volcano — Santa Rita, San Francisco, and El Molino — processing at their central mill, Beneficio Las Cruces, acquired in 1990 and continually improved. In 2011, they implemented a quality programme separating each farm into small blocks — tablones — by altitude, quality potential, and growing conditions. Buena Vista #1 is one of these blocks within Finca El Molino. The family also produces their own organic fertiliser, Huisil — made from coffee pulp, fish, bones, and plant matter — with measurable improvements in soil health and, in trials, visible improvement in cup profile. Natural processing at Beneficio Las Cruces follows the family's systematic approach: controlled fermentation and soaking experiments, tablon-by-tablon separation, and careful drying. The variety blend — Anacafe 14, Bourbon, and Maragogype — produces a lot with layered character: Bourbon brings sweetness and structure, Maragogype adds body and depth, Anacafe 14 contributes resilience and complexity. Cupping score 86.5. At Handpickers, we selected Buena Vista #1 because the Salaverria family treats quality as a structural commitment, not a marketing position — six generations of experience, a decade-long lot separation programme, and a level of care for their workers that few producers match. Coffee from the Santa Ana volcano has history. This lot continues it.
